HACKBERRY TEXAS – IMPROVING FOR THE FUTURE
Hackberry was incorporated in 1983 as a Type B General Law municipality with the name of Town of Hackberry. During that time there was poor roads, poor water supplies and failing septic system throughout the city. In 1987 the first official Hackberry City Hall was built by citizens and leaders of the new city. The materials and labor were donated by several generous individuals such as Danny and Jean Buckalew, Brenda Lewallen, Arlene Ranegar, Bill Quakenbusch, Jerry Davis, Andy and Nancy Shores, Ike Turner, Greg and Gracie Mattocks, Donna Draper, Terri Brouillette, Gene Brown, Pat Daniels and many others that the city records do not list. In 2001 Hackberry met all the necessary requirements to become a Type A General Law Municipality at which time the name was changed to City of Hackberry as you know it today.
The second City Hall was purchased in 1994 and The City of Hackberry moved into their newest City Hall in May of 2012. Currently the city has seen a new water system, new sewer system, new road improvements and much more that has allowed the city to grow tremendously. There is now an efficient water supply and sewer system to supply 1000+ customers. The city has plans to have all the roads resurfaced in the very near future as well. As the City of Hackberry continues to grow there will be many improvements to the community along with the construction of many new homes in the area.
The governing body of Hackberry is made up of a City Council consisting of five Council Members as well as a Mayor. The Council Members and Mayor are elected at large with staggering terms of 2 years. The city also established the office of City Administrator in 2007 with the basic responsibilities of a City Manager. The Council meets each second Thursday of the month at 7 pm to conduct city business. All meetings are held at the City Hall located at 119 Maxwell Road on the west side of the street. All meetings are open to the public and agendas are posted outside the front door of City Hall for the public’s information.
