The formation of Denton is heavily tied into that of Denton County Texas.  Settlement of the Denton area began in the mid-1800s when William S. Peters of Kentucky acquired a land grant from the Texas Congress and name it Peters Colony.  The initial settlement began in the southeast part of the county in 1843 and shortly after the Texas Legislature voted to form Denton County in 1846.  The county and town were named after a preacher and lawyer named John B. Denton who was killed in 1841 during a skirmish with Kichai people in what is now know to us as Tarrant County.  Alton and Pickneyville were selected as the county seat before Denton was named for the position in 1857.

During its incorporation in 1866 J.B. Sawyer served as the first mayor of Denton.  As the city grew past its original boundaries it became a agricultural trade center for the mill and cottage industries.  In 1881 came the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railways and brought a huge influx of people to the area.  1890 North Texas Normal College, now known as University of North Texas was established as well as the Girls’ Industrial College in 1903 which is now known as Texas Woman’s University.  With the two new colleges the impact on Dentons economy and culture increased dramatically.

Denton’s population continued to grow from 1960 to 1980 due to direct connection of the construction of I-35E and I-35W as well as the opening of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 1974.  Then in the 1890s, heavy manufacturing companies such as Victor Equipment Company and Peterbilt joined older companies such as Moore Business Forms and Morrison Milling Company in Denton, TX.  With such infrastructure now in place, Denton’s population blasted from 66,270 in 1990 to 80,537 in 2000.  A Houston-based real estate company named United Equities purchased the 100-block of Fry Street and announced that many of the historic buildings would be demolished to build new mixed-use commercial centers.
